Week 1 Introduction

Hello my friends! My name is Brandon Mitchell and I live in the small town of Glenrock, Wyoming. The town of Glenrock is so small we don't have any stop lights and mail isn't delivered to houses so everybody has a P.O. Box. Glenrock is about 20 miles from Casper, Wyoming where a temple is currently being constructed and we're very excited to have a temple so close to us soon. My wife and I have been married for 20 years and have 4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls that range in age from 19 to 12.

I'm currently in my senior year and hopefully this will be my last semester. I was scheduled to graduate in July but I'm going to be home for a few month's healing up from a couple of hip surgeries, so I figured I'd try to knock it out while I'm home, so I don't go stir crazy. I hope to graduate in April with my Bachelors degree in Applied Business Management.

I'm constantly dealing with Geology because I work in the oil and gas industry in the shale oil rich powder river basin. I thought this would be a very interesting class considering my company drills for and produces oil through shale rock into different geologic formations and zones. Once they drill down vertically into the zone they are drilling into they will then turn the drill-bit horizontally and drill up to 2 1/2 miles through the zone and then fracture the rock in different areas to allow the oil and gas to flow freely up to the surface which it then gets shipped down pipelines or semi-trucks to the processing facility.

I love to fly fish in my spare time, but with school the last couple of years that hasn't happened at all. The thing I love about fly fishing is to be in the middle of a creek, stream or in the middle of a river and the water rushing by and admiring the beauty around me while fishing.

I hope to be able to learn more about the different rocks in my area and also be able to apply what I've learned to my current work situation and understand what our company geologists are seeing and looking for.

I look forward to learning with and from each of you this semester.
